Book: The Holy Wild

"The Holy Wild” is Mark Buchanan’s follow-up to his challenging book, “Your God is Too Safe”.

Buchanan’s writing style is simply amazing! Beth Moore, an accomplished writer herself, is quoted as saying, “I want to write like Mark when I grow up.” When you read one of his books, I’m positive that you will understand why she says that. Personally, I think that I would read his works, even if they were pathetically boring (which they definitely are not!) just for the good that it does my vocabulary. I guess because of that, Buchanan’s writings challenge you in more ways than one.

The Holy Wild is a fascinating read. Many times I am prone to skim and scan, but with this book I found myself reading every word and many times re-reading. I have a practice of writing down notes and page numbers in the back of books that I read, this time I had so many notes that I ran out of space. Believe me, that is not always the case. Okay, enough of my gushing! In this edition, Buchanan continues and expands some of the themes that be began in “Too Safe”. He deals in-depth with the notion of trusting the character of God even when we can’t make sense of our disasters and circumstances. His premise is that unless we trust the character of God, we’ll never venture into all that He has in store for us. He also addresses the principle of resting in God and resting in the steadiness of His character. However, this rest is not an invitation to idleness, but rather a wake up call…a call into the Holy Wild.
