Book Review
There is no shortage of leadership books available in the marketplace today and in many ways, these authors are all regurgitating each other's findings. The dearth in the marketplace however is the books focusing on spiritual leadership. While business and management books offer spiritual leaders enough information to cut and paste into our context, we often feel like this "chewing the meat" and "throwing out the bone" technique leaves us famished. Reggie McNeal's new book, "Practicing Greatness: 7 Disciplines of Extraordinary Spiritual Leaders" is not only a good read but a great practical application book that emphasizes principles within our paradigm. The thesis of this book asserts that "Greatness in the kingdom of God is a journey toward humility". Five of the areas McNeal deals with in conjunction with the disciplines he outlines for spiritual leaders are self knowledge, self mindfulness, self vigilance, self consciousness, self alertness all of which he claims are critical to attaining greatness. While some of Mr. McNeal's approach to expounding on leadership principles may come across as rudimentary to readers who frequent such subject matter, many will find his outlook refreshing since it comes from a biblical perspective. Plus his stuff on the "context of the call" versus "the content of the call" is worth the price of the book. - Shay Mann |
